Okay, so you know those nostalgic pony bead lizard keychains from the ’90s? Well, Free People is now selling one for $22. TWENTY-TWO. DOLLARS. For this:

When I saw the $22 price tag, my first thought was—I can totally make that. So we did. We hit play on a YouTube tutorial and got to crafting. They turned out great and were basically free because we had most of the supplies on hand.
What You’ll Need:
- Pony beads – I used a mix of pearl and regular opaque
- Plastic lacing cord – This is the one I used
- Keyrings
- Scissors

How It Went Down:
We followed this video tutorial, paused it when we needed to, and crafted as a team. Even my 4-year-old joined in. He chose the colors and counted out the beads I needed.
Bonus? I Already Had the Beads:
I still had a stash of pony beads left over from Flora’s Taylor Swift-themed birthday party where we set up a friendship bracelet-making station. So all I had to buy was the cord and some keyrings.
Craft Sale Ready:
The kids had so much fun that we’re turning this into our first little summer hustle: DIY Lizard Keychain Kits for their craft table. Each kit will include:
- Enough beads to make one lizard
- Cord
- Keyring
- Simple printed instructions (plus a QR code which links to the video tutorial)
Final Thoughts:
This craft was nostalgic, super budget-friendly, and actually held everyone’s attention. Plus, the kids are learning about colors, patterns, counting, and entrepreneurship—all in one go. Take that, Free People.
Have you made these before? Thinking of trying it with your kids? Drop a comment and let me know how it goes!
