Green With Envy: My Latest Thrift Store Haul + Best Thrifting Tips for Home Decor Treasures

If there’s one thing that keeps me hooked on thrifting for home decor, it’s the thrill of finding those one-of-a-kind, personality-packed pieces you’ll never see at a big-box store. On my latest thrift adventure, I walked out with a haul that’s making my home green with envy — literally.

Today I’m sharing a peek at what I scored, what makes these pieces special, and my top thrifting tips so you can hunt down your own home decor gems.

My Thrift Store Finds: A Closer Look

  1. Emerald Green Glass Vase
The moment I spotted this tall green glass vase, I envisioned it with a single oversized bloom or a few sculptural branches. Vintage green glassware like this adds instant charm to open shelving or a mantel.
  2. Square Green Glass Ashtray / Trinket Dish
This chunky green glass square piece could easily double as a trinket dish or catchall. If you’re new to vintage glassware, pieces like this are often from the 1960s-70s and bring a touch of mid-century modern style.
  3. Cabbage Leaf & Carrot Ceramic Dish
I’m a sucker for quirky kitchenware. This veggie-themed ceramic dish would be adorable as a spoon rest or cheese plate. Mixing playful vintage ceramics into a modern kitchen keeps things fun and personal.
  4. Maple Leaf Ceramic Dish
Leaf-shaped dishes are a thrifting staple. I love using them on coffee tables, in bathrooms for jewelry, or even on my nightstand to corral hair ties and lip balm.
  5. Teal Ribbed Glass Bowl
This piece brings texture and a rich jewel tone to any space. I plan to use it for serving snacks or holding seasonal fruit. Pro tip: ribbed glassware is trending hard right now.
  6. Vintage Green Books
    • Buy Yourself the Fcking Lilies* by Tara Schuster
    • Domino: The Book of Decorating
Books with green covers? Yes, please. Not only are these great reads, but they also style beautifully on open shelves, bringing cohesion to a room when you group books by color.
  7. Green Depression Glass Goblet
This vintage goblet gives major cottagecore vibes. Depression glass is highly collectible — it was originally made during the Great Depression to bring a little color to tough times. I’ll use this piece for cocktails or even as a mini vase.

Top Thrifting Tips for Home Decor Finds

If you want to bring home a curated, stylish look on a budget, here’s how to level up your thrifting game:

1. Shop with a color story in mind.
If you’re thrifting for home decor, shopping with a color story in mind can help your finds look cohesive once you style them at home. Green glass and ceramics are having a huge moment. When you focus on a single color palette, your finds will look intentional when styled together.

2. Scan the shelves twice.
Eye-level is picked over first. Crouch down or look high — that’s where treasures hide.

3. Don’t overlook the book section.
Don’t overlook books when thrifting for home decor — a well-styled bookshelf can instantly elevate a room. Hardcover books with beautiful spines or covers make fantastic styling elements. Look for coordinating colors and interesting typography.

4. Think beyond original use.
That ashtray? Now it’s a jewelry dish. That goblet? Now it’s a candle holder. Open your mind to new ways to use old pieces.

5. Check for quality and imperfections.
Run your fingers over glassware to check for chips, and hold pieces up to the light. Slight wear adds character, but major damage is a no-go unless you’re going for full-on rustic charm.

6. Visit often and stay patient.
The best hauls happen when you visit regularly. Not every trip will be a win, but persistence pays off.

10 Reasons to Thrift for Home Decor

  1. Save money on stylish home accents
Find designer-quality pieces and vintage gems at a fraction of retail prices.
  2. Discover unique vintage home decor
Thrift stores are the best source for one-of-a-kind finds that add personality to your space.
  3. Shop sustainably and reduce waste
Secondhand shopping helps keep perfectly good decor out of landfills.
  4. Create a curated, eclectic look
Mix old and new to design a home that reflects your style — not a catalog.
  5. Tap into trending decor styles
Easily score pieces that fit popular looks like grandmillennial, cottagecore, mid-century modern, and boho chic.
  6. Add character and charm to your home
Vintage pieces bring history, texture, and warmth to modern spaces.
  7. Support local charities and small businesses
Many thrift stores fund important community programs.
  8. Score quality craftsmanship
Older items were often built to last — think solid wood, hand-blown glass, and detailed ceramics.
  9. Fuel your creativity
Repurpose, upcycle, or style thrifted pieces in unexpected ways.
  10. Enjoy the thrill of the hunt
There’s nothing more satisfying than uncovering a hidden gem or scoring a dream piece for your home.

If you want even more inspiration for thrifting for home decor, check out Big Thrift Energy — it’s one of my favorite resources for making the most of secondhand finds.

If this post inspires you to hit the thrift store, remember this: decorating your home doesn’t have to be expensive or cookie-cutter. Some of the best pieces are waiting to be discovered secondhand — and with a little vision, they’ll look like a million bucks.

Now tell me — which piece from my haul would you snag for your own home?
