Homemade Glitter Playdough: A Fun DIY for Kids
Looking for an easy and creative activity to keep the kids entertained? Making homemade glitter playdough is a perfect hands-on project that’s as fun to make as it is to play with. Plus, it uses simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Add some sparkle with glitter, and you’ve got a recipe for hours of imaginative fun!
Why Make Your Own Playdough?
This past Saturday, two of my kids had friends over. I wanted to come up with an activity that would keep them entertained. I also wanted to leave them with something fun to take home. I first thought we bake cookies together, so I looked through my pantry to see what ingredients I had. Then I remembered the overstock of glitter I still have from my Etsy shop days of making resin alphabet sets. That’s when I decided on making homemade glitter playdough! It was a huge hit and super easy to prepare. Homemade playdough is a great substitute to store-bought options because it’s:
- Cost-Effective: You can make large batches for a fraction of the cost of pre-made dough.
- Customizable: Choose your favorite colors, add glitter, or even mix in scents like vanilla or peppermint for extra sensory fun.
- Kid-Safe: Since you control the ingredients, it’s non-toxic and safe for little hands.
Glitter Playdough Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1/3 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Food coloring (choose your favorite colors!)
- Optional: Glitter for sparkle
Instructions:
- Combine all the ingredients in a 2-quart saucepan.
- Stir the mixture over low/medium heat. Keep stirring to prevent lumps.
- Continue stirring until the dough thickens and begins to gather around the spoon.
- Remove the dough from the pan and place it onto wax paper or a plate to cool.
- Once cooled, knead the dough until it’s smooth.
- Add glitter and knead it in for an extra sparkle touch.
Tips for Success
- Adjust Consistency: If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, knead in a few drops of water.
- Storage: Store your playdough in an airtight container or ziplock bag to keep it fresh for weeks.
- Cleanup: Use a plastic tablecloth or mat while playing to make cleanup a breeze.
